The track
In the late 19th century, Daniel Best, Charles Henry Holt and Benjamin Holt tried to make steam tractors useful for agriculture. A tractor would provide huge advances in agriculture. But there was a problem. These steam tractors weighed so much that they kept getting stuck in the soft farmland. Looking for a solution, the idea of taking the road with the tractor was experimented with in 1904: the crawler.
Although it would be years before the concept was usable, a breakthrough had been forced. The caterpillar track would revolutionise road, water and mining. Transport became possible in previously inaccessible areas. The English translation for a caterpillar is caterpillar.
Eventually, the invention of the caterpillar track would have a major impact beyond agriculture. The caterpillar made it possible to develop an armoured vehicle: the tank.
