A second life

Caterpillar engines are designed so that they can be given a second life after a large number of hours of operation with the help of an overhaul. In this way, a Caterpillar engine can last more than 20 years.

The YES overhaul

At YES, we understand that it is very important for you to be on shore as soon as possible. Therefore we are keen to get you sailing again as soon as possible. A complete overhaul is carried out within two to four weeks. This includes: disassembly, overhaul, test runs in the test hall, engine commissioning, test runs and measurements. Besides speed, the quality of an overhaul is extremely important. In the past twenty years, YES has therefore developed an approach that combines quality and speed.

Working Method

When an engine needs to be overhauled varies from case to case. This is why we always come to you in person first to thoroughly inspect the engine. An endoscope is used to examine the inside of the engine. Based on the findings, we make a recommendation report. If it is indeed time for overhaul we make an offer and a planning. A planning is not an empty promise at YES. We make every effort to meet the schedule.

Three types of overhauls

At YES, we use three types of overhauls. First, an upper overhaul which is performed at 50% of the total engine running hours. Typically, we perform this overhaul on board. After reaching the total number of running hours, an engine qualifies for an inframe overhaul or a complete overhaul. The inframe overhaul can easily be performed on board.

The complete overhaul gives the engine a new life. In most cases, the overhaul is carried out in our workshop. Here all facilities are available to perform the overhaul quickly and carefully. When the overhaul is completed, the engine can be extensively tested in the test stand. With the help of the test stand, we ensure that your engine is built back on board in perfect condition.

Care

The quality of an overhaul is determined by the care with which work is done. After dismantling the engine, the basic parts are carefully checked with the latest techniques, such as infrared and magnetic field. Most of the checks are performed in-house by YES. If parts need to be machined we can do this ourselves. If the crankshaft has to be machined – milling, grinding, flattening or boring – we outsource this to our sister company CF-Techniek. Thus, both companies complement each other excellently.

Testing

All overhauled engines are extensively tested by YES in our test stand. In the test stand the conditions of the ship are exactly simulated. Thanks to these tests, we are virtually assured that the engine will perform optimally on board.
